שמחת תורה

by Rabbi Yechiel Weisz, Dean, A.C.E. Israel

The Gamara in Megilla and in other places states that
מקום ארון אינו מן המידה, meaning that the Aron did not take up any space. The קודש קדשים was 10 Amos squared. So, even though the Aron was 2 ½ Amos long, there was still 5 Amos on either side of it. Obviously that was an incredible miracle.

The question is what the point of this נס was. It’s not like the space of the קודש was used for anything else. Granted, there were allot of miracle in the בית המקדש; but no one, except the כהן גדול on יום כפור went into the קודש קדשים. No one saw or noticed this phenomenon.

Obviously, there is a deeper and profound lesson to be learned here. The idea behind אינו מן המידה seems to show that even though the ארון is here, if you check the measurements, you will see that it isn't really there. It doesn’t take up any space.

The Gemara in Bava Basra brings down the various opinions of what exactly was in the ארון. The לוחות, שברי לוחות, מטה של אהרון, צנצנת המן and also a ספר תורה were all either inside the ארון or right next to it. We know that the לוחות and שברי לוחות represent תורה שבכתב ותורה שבעל פה and the other object represent other things. What does theספר תורה represent? We have already the two elements of the Torah, what else could it mean?

Perhaps the ספר תורה in the קודש קדשים represents the idea of לימוד התורה. Not the knowledge. But the learning, toiling and mastering of the Torah. For even if someone knows all the laws of the Torah, we still have a מצוה of יגיעה and עמלה.

The items in the קודש קדשים we not random. They were chosen because they represent various challenges in a person’s life and the fact that Hashem will guide him and her through them. It’s a sign of השגחה פרטית specifically in these parts of life: Marriage (portrayed by the כרובים), פרנסה (צנצנת המן) for example are challenges in ones life where the השגחה פרטית is very much needed and sought after. The שכינה resting in the קודש קדשים was a גילוי of סייעתא דשמיא.

So what did the miracle of אינו מן המידה show?

Perhaps it is as follow: In life we have to do our share. We cannot wait and sit around until all of our problems just solve themselves and things fall into place. You have to do what you can. You have to search for your זיווג, you have to work hard for a living, you have to invest tremendous amount of time in חינוך הבנים, you have spend years to master ש"ס, and work hard on having strong אמונה and a good relationship with Hashem. However, after the fact, when all is set and done if you look back at your achievements you will see that it is אינו מן המידה. Meaning that of course what we did is essential and without it, it would not have happened, but it is אינו מן המידה, in reality Hashem is holding us by the hand guiding us and helping us through all the above difficulties. We are creating the situation for Hashems ברכה to manifest itself. But in the end, it’s all from above.

שמחה, joy and happiness is the appreciation of something. שמחת תורה should be about the appreciation of the תורה. We should think back and see the השגחה פרטית which we have enjoyed in our own personal growth in תורה, strive to create an even better כלי, vessel for Hashem to bring his שפע ברכה in all the various parts of our lives. For even in the קודש קדשים we still had to place the ארון in it.
